Now doesn't that ring a bell?

So do you remember when the party of the Northeast elected a moderate reformer from Illinois who embraced the moral vision of the left-wing of his party in rhetoric more so than in practice (preferring himself a significantly more gradualist agenda focusing on cash transfers from the government to the private sector as a strategy to create a more just system)? And then the Party of the South denied his legitimacy, claimed that he was hell-bent on destroying their "way of life," stealing their freedom, and robbing them to give their property to minorities, and then staged a national revolt that effectively dragged along their previous moderates as well. Yep...
